Looks like prospero has deleted account and all posts

I can't find any of prospero's posts, even when people are quoting them in threads, the actual posts by prospero have disappeared.
This is going to shoot a major hole in the forum, probably the biggest one yet, as prospero was involved in just about everything around here for a few years. Any posts that prospero wrote, and anyone that did a reply post to prospero, all those posts are probably gone now.
I wish people would quit deleting their accounts like this, or the forum mechanism should be disabled by which people are able to delete all their posts and all reply posts to them. This kind of action is extremely destructive to the forum, and we are losing an enormous amount of information to people's careless account deletions.
addendum - I would recommend that no one do any reply-posts anymore. If you want to reply to someone on this forum, you will be best served to start a totally new post and quote-reply to that person. Otherwise, when they delete their account, all of your reply-posts to them are going to get thrown in the trash.
Unfortunately, people just cannot be trusted with the power of the account deletion option, and those of us who are willing to stick around and keep contributing are going to lose a lot of our writing if we don't protect ourselves.

prospero hit the account-delete button. How wonderful.
prospero is still active on the Devuan forum as of 2 days ago, supporting @aitor's Genuen distro that is a free version of Devuan:
http://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?pid=66114#p66114
So it's just the Trisquel forum that got smashed by prospero's account deletion.

The forum would become difficult to read if people would do that, but I see no chance of this happenning. My solution to keep useful information would be to save any discussion thread I initiate, or find important, and try adding things to the wiki. I hope to use more time for this soon. Besides, I am worried that Trisquel has nearly a single person doing all the work. Right now, it seems updates are not pushed to the server, so there is some problem to be solved. Trisquel seems to be the only free distro that is usable for almost everyone then it is essential that it remains alive. I wish I could help there but I am certainly lacking a number of skills for that.
Genuen distro that is a free version of Devuan
Because it is applying for certification as free distro, I gave it a try in a virtual machine. It took me a lot of efforts to set the keyboard layout to azerty and the language in LXDE menus to French. I did not try so much more afterwards but that gives me a hint already that it may not be ready for average users.
I tried to install GNUinOS, which now is Genuen
and I had a lot of trouble to install it.
I succeded after several emails to the Genuen mailing list.
But after that still many problems,
it seems to me that it is not yet so developed.
Aitor works, in my opinion, hard, to solve everything,
but again and again it is necessary to write to the mailing list,
so that he can solve the question.
I will not use it anymore, I am not a developer and lack knowledge,
so Genuen is, in my opinion, not for an everyday user, like me,
but for people who know a lot and can deal with all those upcomming problems.
For me, the installation of Genuen was as easy as Trisquel, the burden was to change the keyboard layout and menu language.
My problem with Genuen is that I just don't like Devuan like I once did. And if you are not a fan of Devuan, you probably won't like Genuen that much. Anyway, I should try this newest version just to see if it's really better. I never could get sound working with GNUinos in the past, maybe that's been fixed.
My problem with Genuen is that I just don't like Devuan like I once did.
Is Devuan anything else than Debian without systemd, meaning, some extra work to find how to do things normally done with systemd on Debian, but still as easy to use as Debian?
I used Debian on my D8 when the MATE session was crashing too often with etiona (problem solved with aramo). At the time, Debian was not installing anything non-free by default then as long as I did not use any third party package manager, it did not make much difference to me as compared with Trisquel, which is what I liked. Then I am expecting that Genuen could be made as easy to use as well, with the advantage of being a free distro.
>"Is Devuan anything else than Debian without systemd, meaning, some extra work to find how to do things normally done with systemd on Debian, but still as easy to use as Debian?"
I don't know, I've never used Debian for more than a very brief demo, probably less than an hour at a time. I used a version of Devuan that I had removed the non-free firmware and non-free packages from for about a year and a half, but eventually the annoying habits of it losing things like networking and sound drove me deeper and deeper into using Trisquel.
I have never had any network or sound problems with Devuan. What is your hardware?
Btw, are you okay with the implications of having systemd on your system?
The age verification code, the fact that poettering worked as a microsoft employee for a few years undisclosed? And also redhat is involved with many government contracts.
You almost have to wonder if hidden vulnerabilities might be hiding within due to how big it is and the fact its never been audited once completely.
Feel free to email me your response if you wish. Or tell me when you comment.

No, I treat systemd like any other large free software project - there's a lot of eyes on it, and if there were vulnerabilities built in they would probably be found pretty quickly.
The thing I don't like about systemd is that I don't benefit from a lot of its "features" such as journald because there's no value in them for me over the older ways of doing things. And yet, my system pays the systemd tax with more ram usage and slower performance. And there's not a lot of good information available about how to bring systemd under control from a resource and performance perspective. Most of what I know I had to learn myself by trial and error.
Hope so for the sake of all those who use it.
My thought is, if it gets big enough, no amount of eyes will be enough to keep up.
But then again, that would also be true about the kernel itself.
Which might already be possibly true... so, idk.
>"I have never had any network or sound problems with Devuan. What is your hardware?"
It was some kind of Asus laptop that died after a few years of use. Probably not a good hardware setup to use with Devuan. I use much better Dasharo Corebooted systems now from NovaCustom.
If its librebooted, corebooted, canoebooted, etc.. and especially if it has ath9k wifi card, it is likely to work.
Most of my hardware has ath9k, so maybe that's why I don't run into network problems much at all.
The sound however is a mystery to me completely.
I do know wireless usb mice tend to be tricky to switch between in any distros. It could be, because I avoid pulseaudio and pipewire like they are the plague though. Anyone who can tell me if usb wireless mice can be easily started from pulseaudio or similar can speak up.
Also, yes Dasharo sounds like its a user friendly version of coreboot. I look forward to ordering from novacustom soon.
I should try Devuan again on this NovaCustom laptop, or ExeGNU would be better for me, just to see if the overall experience is better. I'll think about it. I'm pretty comfortable with what I'm using now and not in the mood to do any distro hopping.
1.
Does Devuan use the free Linux kernel or the kernel of Debian with proprietory software?
2.
Does Devuan use all the proprietary software?
3.
and therefore Genuen und ExeGNU e.g. try to use only free software?
ExeGNU is also based on Devuan.
4.
After fixing it twice,
I am again every time I start Genuen, the time does not change and keeps the old one from the last session.
So I have to set the time every time I start Genuen
in order to do a sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade.
But now I can´t do a sudo apt upgrade because acpid (or similar name) blocks it.
That´s why I will not use it anymore. Always trouble.
Aitor would need like Trisquel several people who check his Distro Genuen regularly, in order to find all problems and to solve it.
That´s very good in Trisquel, it is a community work.
>"1. Does Devuan use the free Linux kernel or the kernel of Debian with proprietory software?"
It comes with the Debian kernel (I think), but is very easy to switch to the Linux-libre kernels from Trisquel forum member @jxself.
>"2. Does Devuan use all the proprietary software?"
It comes with proprietary firmware installed by default, similar to Debian.
>"3. and therefore Genuen und ExeGNU e.g. try to use only free software?
ExeGNU is also based on Devuan."
Yes, that is my understanding. I used ExeGNU for a few months at one point. ExeGNU is probably the better of the two free software Devuan-based distros in my limited experience.
I would wait till Genuen is in better shape to use it. And when it is, if you want to switch to the newer version of genuen, wait a bit first in case. New versions of Genuen probably will be somewhat buggy if you know what I mean.
Btw, spoiler for anyone looking at this comment, the usrmerge change is hell to deal with on devuan.
I absolutely hate it.
Daedalus to Excalibur has been a buggy mess for me lol.
Did you try the in-place upgrade to Excalibur? I almost never try the upgrade path, I prefer to do new installations any time there is a new distro release. Attempting the upgrade to Trisquel Ecne was also a buggy mess for me. Wiping it and newly installing is the way to go.
That was what I meant... I tried to update from Daedalus to Excalibur...
it was a buggy mess.
To be fair to the Trisquel 12 Ecne upgrade tool from Trisquel 11 Aramo, I believe I was the first public tester of an early beta, so finding bugs would have been expected and the process has probably smoothed out since then. However I've long been a firm believer in wiping and installing new when it's time to upgrade. I like the fact that I learn a lot of new things that way and don't get stuck in old configurations.
thanks andyprough,
what do you think about the Trinity Desktop, which is used in ExeGNU?
Is it a simple desktop, simpler as in MATE, XFCE, surely simpler as in KDE/Plasma?
AFAIK it is still developed. But almost no Desktop supports it.
It would be also interesting if Trisquel could support it/have it, but I don´t know how much work it would be for the small Trisquel team.
I love Trinity desktop, because I used its original version KDE3 for many years. It's a very comfortable desktop environment for me, and very pleasant on the eyes for me.
That and Lumina Desktop are the only qt based desktop environments I respect.
Or in general...
Although I wish Trinity Desktop didn't require so many bloated linux frameworks. (dbus for example)
I have heard dbus doesn't do much cpu usage, but it does have a hardware id so... yeah I'll pass if I can.
I wish people would quit deleting their accounts like this
I had a chat with prospero on IRC today, he did not delete his account, he just did not connect for a while and then noticed his account was deleted. Not sure what happened.
That's terrible, that means any of us and all our messages and everyone that replied to our messages could be deleted at any time. A very bad forum software bug. We're going to need to get this addressed.

https://www.essora.org/blog/posts/2026-10-21-essora-eos-sonicde-xlibre-en.html Just saw this on distrowatch. It's GPLv3 and a devuan derivitive. I like the sound of it because no Wayland, uses Xlibre. Also no systemd so that would be a plus for some. Has its own browser and office suite. Uses apt, dpkg and flatpak. The SonicDE desktop is a fork of KDE Plasma 6. Has anyone tried Essora?
Interesting, I wonder what that office suite is based on?
I am wondering too. It seems like an awful ambitious project with maybe only one guy doing it, josejp2424. I did find out at sourceforge that there are variants: "Eos is based on Debian with systemd, while Excalibur is based on Devuan without systemd." From here: https://www.essora.org/blog/ it looks like a lot of activity starting May 16 so I am wondering if it's that new. Some of the links on the home page don't seem to exist. No information re the office suite could be found. I would try it if it were live, but nothing says it is and I don't have a place to just try it right now.
Probably it's being created by AI, we see some projects these days with a huge amount of active development by one person plus Claude AI or ChatGPT.
